Venice – the ‘incomparable city, the most beautiful queen, this paradise’ – is how the Englishman Thomas Coryat describes the lagoon city that deeply impressed him on his trip to Europe in 1608. But in addition to the architecture, the canals and the people from a wide variety of cultures, it was the music in particular that fascinated Coryat: ‘It was so beautiful, so delightful, so unique, so admirable, so unsurpassable that it enchanted and amazed all the strangers.’

This album features four Austrian composers from the late 19th to the early 20th century: Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Franz Schreker, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

The USSR Radio Symphony Orchestra was
the official radio orchestra for the Soviet Union's All-Union Radio network, founded in 1930. Its name changed several times over the years, including the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and the USSR State Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, before becoming the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra after the fall of the USSR.

The music offers a directness of expression which transports the listener through a series of climaxes and reflections, culminating in a Last Judgement in which the composer said, ‘an overwhelming love illuminates our being’. The release is accompanied by a personal introduction from Kahchun Wong, reflecting on what the music of Mahler means to him, and a programme note by Mahler expert, composer David Matthews.
