Fairport Convention are an English folk rock band, formed in 1967 by guitarists Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol, bassist Ashley Hutchings and drummer Shaun Frater (with Frater replaced by Martin Lamble after their first gig). They started out influenced by American folk rock, with a set list dominated by Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell songs and a sound that earned them the nickname "the British Jefferson Airplane". Vocalists Judy Dyble and Iain Matthews joined them before the recording of their self-titled debut in 1968; afterwards, Dyble was replaced by Sandy Denny, and Matthews later left during the recording of their third album. Collection includes: "What We Did On Our Holidays" (1969) Expanded Remastered 2003; "Unhalfbricking" (1969) Expanded Remastered 2003; "Liege & Lief" (1969) Expanded Remastered 2002; "Babbacombe" Lee (1971) Expanded Remastered 2004; "Rosie" (1973) Expanded Remastered 2004; "Nine" (1973) Expanded Remastered 2005; "House Full: Live at the LA Troubadour 1970" (1986) Reissue 2001; "Heyday: BBC Radio Sessions 1968-1969" (1987) Expanded Remastered 2002.

Digitally remastered edition of the 2nd Fairport Convention LP and the first to include the presence of Sandy Denny was recorded in 1968. It showcases a young group taking pleasure in singing and playing whatever took its' collective fancy, and doing this with surprising sensitivity, authority and musicality. Also evident is the trademark unpredictability and wacky sense of fun which marked their live concerts . Make 'em laugh, make 'em cry, make 'em puzzled; that was early Fairport. Includes 3 Bonus Tracks. "Throwaway Street Puzzle" was released as the b-side of the "Meet On The Ledge" single. "You're Gonna Need My Help" is a rare BBC Radio recording from 1969 and features a virtuoso slide-guitar performance by Richard Thompson. "Some Sweet Day" was originally recorded to be released as a single but was shelved in favour of "Meet On The Ledge".

Sandy Denny's haunting, ethereal vocals gave Fairport a big boost on her debut with the group. A more folk-based album than their initial effort, What We Did on Our Holidays was divided between original material and a few well-chosen covers. This contains several of their greatest moments: Denny's "Fotheringay," Richard Thompson's "Meet on the Ledge," the obscure Joni Mitchell composition "Eastern Rain," the traditional "She Moves Through the Fair," and their version of Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine." And more than simply being a collection of good songs (with one or two pedestrian ones), it allowed Fairport to achieve its greatest internal balance, and indeed one of the finest balances of any major folk-rock group. The strong original material, covers of little-known songs by major contemporary songwriters such as Dylan and Mitchell, and updates of traditional material were reminiscent of the blend achieved by the Byrds on their early albums, with Fairport Convention giving a British slant to the idiom. The slant would become much more British by the end of the 1960s, though, both gaining and losing something in the process. Confusingly, What We Did on Our Holidays was titled Fairport Convention in its initial U.S. release, with a different cover from the U.K. edition as well, although Fairport's very first album from 1968 had used the title Fairport Convention as well. In the CD age, the title was standardized in all territories to What We Did on Our Holidays. [The 2003 CD reissue of this record adds historical liner notes and three bonus tracks from the same era, one from a BBC broadcast, one from a non-LP B-side, and one a studio outtake.]

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking (1969) Expanded Remastered 2003

Unhalfbricking is the third album by British folk rock band Fairport Convention, released in 1969. It is seen as a transitional album in their history and marked a further musical move away from American influences towards more traditional English folk songs that had begun on their previous album, What We Did On Our Holidays and arguably reached its peak on the follow-up, Liege & Lief, released later the same year. In 2004 Q magazine placed Unhalfbricking at number 41 in its list of the 50 Greatest British Albums Ever, and in the same year The Observer, describing it as "a thoroughly English masterpiece", listed it at number 27 in its Top 100 British Albums. The following year, 2005, it was included in Robert Dimery's "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

Unhalfbricking was, if only in retrospect, a transitional album for the young Fairport Convention, in which the group shed its closest ties to its American folk-rock influences and started to edge toward a more traditional British folk-slanted sound. That shift wouldn't be definitive until their next album, Liege & Lief. But the strongest link to the American folk-rock harmony approach left with the departure of Ian Matthews, who left shortly after the sessions for Unhalfbricking began. The mixture of obscure American folk-rock songs, original material, and traditional interpretations that had fallen into place with What We Did on Our Holidays earlier in the year was actually still intact, if not as balanced. Sandy Denny's two compositions, her famous "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" and the far less celebrated but magnetically brooding "Autopsy," were among the record's highlights. So too were the goofball French Cajun cover of Bob Dylan's "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (here retitled "Si Tu Dois Partir," and a British hit) and the magnificent reading of Dylan's "Percy's Song," though the bash through Dylan's "Million Dollar Bash" was less effective. Richard Thompson's pair of songs, however, were less memorable. The clear signpost to the future was their 11-minute take on the traditional song "A Sailor's Life," with guest fiddle by Dave Swarbrick, soon to join Fairport himself and make his own strong contribution toward reshaping the band's sound.

Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief (1969) Expanded Remastered 2002
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 281 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 126 Mb | Scans ~ 162 Mb
Label: Island Records | # 586 929-2, IMCD 291 | Time: 00:55:21

Liege & Lief is the fourth album by the English folk rock band Fairport Convention. It is the third and final album the group released in the UK in 1969, all of which prominently feature Sandy Denny as lead female vocalist. (Denny did not appear on the group's 1968 debut album). It is also the very first Fairport album on which all songs have either been adapted (freely) from traditional British and Celtic folk material (for example "Matty Groves", "Tam Lin"), or else are original compositions (such as "Come All Ye", "Crazy Man Michael") written and performed in a similar style. By introducing songs of this genre into the group's repertoire Denny, who had previously sung and recorded traditional folk songs as a solo artist, was instrumental in this transformation. Although Denny quit the band even before the album's release, Fairport Convention has continued to the present day to make music almost exclusively within the traditional British folk music idiom, and are still most strongly associated with it.

In the decades since its original release, more than one writer has declared Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief the definitive British folk-rock album, a distinction it holds at least in part because it grants equal importance to all three parts of that formula. While Fairport had begun dipping their toes into British traditional folk with their stellar version of "A Sailor's Life" on Unhalfbricking, Liege & Lief found them diving head first into the possibilities of England's musical past, with Ashley Hutchings digging through the archives at the Cecil Sharp House in search of musical treasure, and the musicians (in particular vocalist Sandy Denny) eagerly embracing the dark mysteries of this music. (Only two of the album's eight songs were group originals, though "Crazy Man Michael" and "Come All Ye" hardly stand out from their antique counterparts.) Liege & Lief was also recorded after a tour bus crash claimed the lives of original Fairport drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's girlfriend; as the members of the group worked to shake off the tragedy (and break in new drummer Dave Mattacks and full-time fiddler Dave Swarbrick), they became a stronger and more adventurous unit, less interested in the neo-Jefferson Airplane direction of their earlier work and firmly committed to fusing time-worn folk with electric instruments while honoring both. And while Liege & Lief was the most purely folk-oriented Fairport Convention album to date, it also rocked hard in a thoroughly original and uncompromising way; the "Lark in the Morning" medley swings unrelentingly, the group's crashing dynamics wring every last ounce of drama from "Tam Lin" and "Matty Groves," and Thompson and Swarbrick's soloing is dazzling throughout. Liege & Lief introduced a large new audience to the beauty of British folk, but Fairport Convention's interpretations spoke of the present as much as the past, and the result was timeless music in the best sense of the term. [The CD was also released with two previously unreleased takes of "Sir Patrick Spens" and "The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood."]

Fairport Convention's only concept album was built around the story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, a convicted killer who survived three attempts to hang him. Cut by the four-man Fairport lineup of Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Mattacks, and Dave Pegg, the original album was a self-contained work with a specific beginning and ending. It's also never been much more than cult item in the group's early catalog, despite some spirited playing on "Little Did I Think," "I Was Sixteen, Pt. 2," "St. Ninian's Isle/Trumpet Hornpipe," and "Sailor's Alphabet." The slipcased "Island Remasters" keeps the concept and the original album's content intact – with killer sound as expected, and each song now getting its own index number – and appends a pair of bonus tracks that justify the purchase. The first is "Farewell to a Poor Man's Son," a "lost" song by the group from the BBC program on John Lee that was the inspiration for the album, and "Breakfast in Mayfair," both from an earlier lineup of the band featuring Jerry Donahue. Additionally, "Breakfast in Mayfair" features Sandy Denny's singing, in a haunting falsetto. Those tracks, unfortunately, have not been preserved from first-generation archival sources, and some restoration has been necessary, and they still don't sound as crisp as the rest of the official album now does. But since there were no other suitable sources, this is the only way you're ever likely to hear those two addenda to the original album.

Fairport Convention - Rosie (1973) Expanded Remastered 2004
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 320 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 139 Mb | Scans included
Label: Island | # IMCD 309, 982 150-2 | 00:56:23

"Rosie" is the eighth studio album by folk-rock outfit Fairport Convention, released in 1973. The album was the first to feature Australian singer-songwriter guitarist Trevor Lucas and American lead guitarist Jerry Donahue. Both had previously played with ex-Fairport Sandy Denny, to whom Lucas was married, in the short-lived Fotheringay. Here they had effectively replaced Simon Nicol who had quit Fairport to join another ex-member Ashley Hutchings in The Albion Band, thus leaving the band with no original members until he rejoined in 1976. Remastered reissue includes previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John' (Live), 'The Hen's March Through the Midden…' (Live), 'Rosie' (Live), & 'The Claw' (Live).

Following the departure of Simon Nicol, the group was reconstituted with the addition of Sandy Denny's husband Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue, both formerly of Fotheringay. Their first album was also a miscalculation, a failed attempt to crack the pop music market. There are lots of original songs done in a modern folk-rock sound on Rosie, many written by Lucas, although the best was the title track by Dave Swarbrick (which featured Denny and Richard Thompson, as well as Thompson's future wife, Linda, as guest artists). The Lucas compositions were all pleasant (especially "Knights of the Road" and the haunting "The Plainsman"), but tend to make one think more of Gordon Lightfoot sounding archaic than of previous incarnations of Fairport. The only exceptions are "Peggy's Pub" and "The Hens March Through the Midden," instrumentals that recall the group's old sound. [This version of the album includes bonus material.]

Fairport Convention - Nine (1973) Expanded Remastered 2005
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 333 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 127 Mb | Scans ~ 133 Mb
Label: Island | # 982 796-6, IMCD 310 | 00:55:42

Nine is the ninth album by the British folk rock group Fairport Convention, released in 1973. 2005 Remastered re-issue. Bonus Tracks include 'The Devil in the Kitchen' (Fiddlestix), 'George Jackson' (Live), 'Pleasure and Pain' (Live) and 'Six Days on the Road' (Live).

If you were to rate the albums released by Fairport Convention in the 1970's, the number one in popularity would no doubt be " Full House " and " Rising For The Moon " would weigh in a strong second place. But Right between these two fine releases comes a Disc called " Nine " and it's mark in the history of this band has been understated to say the least. Nine has never been recognized as what it really is…the most important release by this band during the 70's.

The depatures of Richard Thompson & Simon Nicol in 1971 made the future of Fairport seem all but doomed. It was up to Dave Swarbrick and Dave Pegg to keep the boat afloat. The eighth record " Rosie " went down like a "lead Balloon" but it got the two Dave's together with Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue to bring this Folk-Rock Band back from near death. The result of all this talent (not forgetting Drummer Dave Mattacks) was "Nine".

With Jerry on board the band gained a Guitarist who could hold his own along side Richard. But even better with the addition of Trevor, the band had it's best vocalist and songwriter since 1969 when Mrs. Lucas (Sandy Denny) was onboard. There were no ego clashes this time out, and the Chap's were enjoying it all again and stormed the stages of the world doing it.

There are PLENTY of great tunes on "Nine" and it all begins with "The Hexhamshire Lass" a brisk opener sung by Swarb. "Polly On The Shore" is Trevor's most memorable moment on Record and it does sound just as good 32 years later. "To Althea From Prison" features another great vocal from Swarb and some of his best fiddle ever (one of the Great Overlooked Songs of this Band's history). My favorite of this batch is Trevor's "Bring 'Em Down", in concert this song became Epic with "Cosmic Fiddles From Jupiter" often bringing things to an conclusion before the fifteen minute mark on the clock…another Great Overlooked Tune, One of the very best things here. Check out the CD "Before The Moon" for that Space-Journey..

What Jerry Donahue brings to "Nine" is a Guitar and a lot of American Country & Western overtones as featured in "The Cherokee Shuffle" and "Tokyo" instrumentals and the song "Pleasure & Pain" which sounds like a British Burritto Brothers (way different territory for our heroes) but still it works. And the closer, Trevor's "Possibly Parsons Green" put's the Rock back into Folk-Rock, another Brillant Track.

This Remaster features four Bonus Tracks and they are welcome. First up is the Austrailian single version of "Fiddlesix" with Banjo and a 50 piece orchestra (don't laugh, it's good). Bob Dylan's song "George Jackson" get's a wonderful vocal from Trevor and the backing Mandolin (Peggy?) sounds really nice as well. After some Stage-Clowning a live "Pleasure & Pain" doesn't differ from the Studio Version much but the harmonies are "Spot-On".

It all comes to a close with "Six Day's on the Road" that put's us right back in Gram Parson Land with a rousing vocal by Trevor. Sandy would be taking over the Singing on this one and leading the Band within a few more months but this version is still just "the boy's" and you can hear how much fun the are having.

That's "Nine", a real fine record and the Remaster makes it sound Brand New. With the Bonus Tracks added in the running time is 56 minutes. The Lyrics are included, and four pages of notes from Jerry telling the Story, with lot's of pictures of the band with big smiles on their faces!

An important record for Fairport Convention…FOUR STARS

Review by Philip S. Wolf, Amazon.com

Nine was never going to be more than a fair album with some great moments, but this expanded version of Fairport Convention's ninth album is superior to the original edition, the bonus tracks all adding a measure of excitement and energy that was lacking in long stretches of that original. The nine core tracks still have the same problems of inconsistency that one found on hearing them in the '70s, the group showing extraordinary virtuosity and musical instincts on folk-based tracks such as "The Hexamshire Lass" and "The Brilliancy Medley & Cherokee Shuffle," but lacking inspiration on "Polly on the Shore" and "To Althea from Prison." On the latter songs, the band supplied the music to traditional lyrics, and they simply fall flat – it isn't even that the playing is bad, so much as that the failed numbers are uniformly lugubrious in the way they're treated. Part of the problem lies with the fact that while Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue were good guitarists, they weren't terribly interesting – where Richard Thompson always came up with something surprising and unexpected on Fairport's songs, Lucas and Donahue stick with fairly routine pop music sounds, more in keeping with the Eagles (and the later Eagles at that) than the group that recorded Liege & Lief, Full House, and House Full. Lucas' "Bring 'Em Down" is a decent song, with some strong singing and playing by the composer and a lovely and powerful fiddle solo by Swarbrick, but it overstays its welcome and loses its cohesion – "Sloth" it is not. Too much of the album is taken up by easily forgotten contemporary-style rockers like "Big William" and throwaways such as the countrified "Pleasure and Pain"; not even the upbeat, riff-heavy "Possibly Parsons Green" makes up for this problem. [The German bonus tracks, on the other hand, counterbalance the weaker moments among the original nine songs – "The Devil in the Kitchen" is a superb virtuoso fiddle showcase, and the three live tracks that follow, recorded live in London on April 23, 1973; "Pleasure and Pain" fares somewhat better than it did as a studio cut, but the real treats here are "George Jackson" and "Six Days on the Road," which show a looser, freer (and more valid and accurate) version of this band at work. They might not be the kind of material that Fairport fans are necessarily buying the group's CDs to hear, but they liven up and pretty much punch up the proceedings so well that they're a very good reason – along with remastered sound and extensive notes by Jerry Donahue – for upgrading one's version of Nine.]

Fairport Convention - House Full: Live at the LA Troubadour 1970 (1986) Reissue 2001
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 338 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 145 Mb | Scans included
Label: Island | # IMCD 289, 586 376-2 | Time: 00:53:43

1970 found Fairport Convention reduced to a quartet after the departure of their singer Sandy Denny. They decided not to replace her and recorded FULL HOUSE, a ferocious blend of high intensity rock dynamics with traditional British Isle fiddle-filled forms. With accolades accumulating for both FULL HOUSE and its predecessor, the beloved LEIGE AND LEIF, another tour of America was mounted in the late summer. HOUSE FULL was recorded in Los Angeles at the Troubador. A fine companion piece to its alternately-ordered namesake, these eight songs are a revamped set of the live album released only in the UK. The line-up of the band is extremely impressive, but it was not to last. Richard Thompson left the following year before another studio album was made. UK remastered reissue of 1986 album for Hannibal that's out-of-print in the U.S. with 2 added bonus tracks, 'Bonnie Kate/Sir B.McKenzies' & 'Yellow Bird' both taken from the album Live At The Troubadour (1976).

Recorded during Fairport Convention's September 1970 shows in Los Angeles (their second visit to the city in six months), House Full captures the four-piece Full House lineup at its zenith – a point proven by the marathon renditions of "Sloth" and "Matty Groves," which are among its epic highlights. Anybody who thought Sandy Denny was the only person who could convincingly perform the latter is certainly in for a pleasant surprise, as is anyone who thought the Albion Band's version of "Battle of the Somme" was the definitive rendition. By year's end, however, this particular Fairport Convention lineup would have shattered, as Richard Thompson moved on to a solo career. This performance, with its taste of two songs originally intended for a pre-split new album, is a vivid portrayal of all that listeners lost when he went. Originally released as Live at the LA Troubadour in 1976, then reissued, with a slightly different track listing, a decade later as House Full, this remastered collection rounds up all ten of the live songs spread across those two (heavily overlapping) sets, omitting only the doctored studio version of Richard Thompson's "Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman" that appeared on the original 1976 release, and replacing one epic, "Sloth," with another. Among other cosmetic alterations can be found the correct retitling of "Toss the Feathers" as "The Lark in the Morning Medley." However, the 90-plus seconds shorn from "Mason's Apron" for the original House Full release have not been restored for the CD, while fans of the 1976 album probably would have welcomed the restoration of the two "lost" performances. With those latter flaws in mind, then, this isn't the perfect restoration that this exceptional album deserves. But it's by no means a wasted opportunity, either.

Fairport Convention - Heyday: BBC Radio Sessions 1968-1969 (1987) Expanded Remastered 2002
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 412 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 174 Mb | Scans included
Label: Island | # IMCD 290/586 542-2 | Time: 01:11:51

In its previous edition (first released in 1987), Heyday was an important document of Fairport Convention's early days, its dozen tracks including numerous songs (mostly folk-rock covers) that they didn't put on their late-'60s albums. The 2002 edition adds to its value considerably by adding eight more tracks, all of them also taken from 1968-1969 BBC recordings, with all 20 of the songs featuring the lineups (with varying personnel) in which Sandy Denny was included. The 12 songs that were also on the original release, though, remain the most interesting due to the absence of studio counterparts, but also due to their exceptional quality. The version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," with Ian Matthews and Sandy Denny alternating lead vocals, is perhaps the best cover of that standard. There are also fine interpretations of songs, sometimes quite obscure, by Gene Clark, Eric Andersen, Joni Mitchell, Richard Fariña, the Everly Brothers, and Bob Dylan, as well as the quite good Simon Nicol original "Shattering Live Experience." The newly added eight songs, by contrast, are mostly versions of tunes that also showed up on their official late-'60s albums, though Jackson C. Frank's "You Never Wanted Me" (which did previously appear on the Sandy Denny Who Knows Where the Time Goes box set) is an exception. Still, it's good to hear different versions of standouts like "Fotheringay," "Si Tu Dois Partir," "Autopsy," and "Tam Lin," though the arrangements aren't significantly different from the familiar studio ones. A new sleeve note by Ashley Hutchings is another good reason to pick this up. Incidentally, some other Fairport BBC cuts from the time have been bootlegged but eluded inclusion on this disc, though perhaps subpar fidelity had something to do with those decisions.
