Vivaldi wrote an astonishing 500 concertos during his lifetime, of which 27 were composed for solo cello. At the time, the instrument was in its infancy, and it was unusual for great composers to write works specifically for solo cello. Indeed, none of the concertos were published during Vivaldi’s lifetime: they had been written specially for his young female students at the Ospedale della Pietà, where the composer was employed in Venice, and were therefore not widely known. However, Vivaldi clearly saw the potential in the new instrument, otherwise he would not have gone on to write so much material for it; after the violin and bassoon, it is his third most popular solo concerto instrument.

Praised for his ‘passion and sensitivity’ by the BBC Music Magazine for his recording of the concertos by Dohnányi, Enescu & d’Albert, Alban now turns his attention to works by four of his compatriots: Robert Schumann, Friedrich Gernsheim, Robert Volkmann and Albert Dietrich. This collective, along with Johannes Brahms, were all friends and colleagues, each achieving considerable success in their lifetime, yet it is only Schumann and Brahms who have managed to hold onto that mantle through to the present day. Even Schumann’s Cello Concerto, written in 1850, remained unperformed until 1860 and it wasn’t until the early twentieth century that, thanks to Pablo Casals, it secured its rightful place in the repertoire.

In all three quartets the Borodin play with an easy authority and what seems to be perfect style. There are no obvious interpretative quirks, there's nothing showy to get between the music and the listener, and it is evident that these musicians are thoroughly immersed in the authentic Russian tradition of playing Tchaikovsky's music. Technically and tonally they are first rate, and they combine well with the two excellent extra players in Souvenir de Florence.

The Marketts are sometimes classified as a surf group because of their hit instrumental "Out of Limits," one of the last big surf singles, which made number three in early 1964. In reality, they were something of an all-purpose contemporary instrumental group with elements of surf, rock, pop, and even easy listening. And they were not really a group, but a fluid collection of Los Angeles session musicians, working under the direction of producer Joe Saraceno.

A freewheelin' compilation of obscure, groovy Bob Dylan knockoff singles from the mid 60s – pretty wild stuff! It's got a few numbers by singers who so totally and so brazenly imitate Dylan's vocal mannerisms, they almost sound like weird, mirror image, bizarro world songs by the man himself – and many more that kind of do their own thing, albeit with Dylan-esque lyrical imagery – all of it very well produced and performed. It's not all by complete unknowns (how does it feeeeeeeeellllll???), with a track by Tommy Boyce of Boyce & Hart and Monkees songwriting fame, Gary Usher cohort Dick Campbell and others, but most of it is cool & strange stuff by folks we've never heard of – with material ranging from chiming folk rock to surrealistic psych pop! Includes "Breaking Your Balloon" by Johnny Cymbal, "Leaving It All Behind" by The Toads, "Gotta Turn Myself On, Babe" by TJ Black, "Come Free My Mind" by Darrell Cotton, "Thank You Babe" by The Changin' Times, "Pretty Thing (Your Out Of Sight)".

"So Far, So Good… So What!" is the most underrated thrash album by Megadeth and is often neglected for their other much hyped albums "Peace Sells…" and "Rust in Peace"; it really doesn’t get the attention and praise it so richly deserves since it is one of those thrash records which managed to break free from the monotony and mediocrity of a large percentage of 80s thrash.

This exciting programme is presented by Emma Kirkby and London Baroque, household names in the sphere of 'early music', and certainly no new-comers to th works of Handel. Indeed, when they last joined forces in a Handel programme the website MusicWeb International called the performances ones that 'make one wish that all Handel music making could be of this order', while the reviewer in BBC Music Magazine wrote 'Ive seldom been as moved by a recording, both music and performance'.
