Phil Spector changed the landscape of music with innovative productions that influenced virtually every pop producer who followed in his wake. The traditional drums-bass-guitar combination was still the standard in the early 1960s, and only two-track technology was available. Spector created what would become known as the Wall of Sound, using large bands (with several guitarists, two bassists, full string and horn sections), echo chambers, powerful vocalists, and symphonic structures not previously associated with youthoriented pop music. He managed to draw from different musical genres, including R&B, soul, teen idol pop, rock & roll, and doo-wop, to create a lush, resonant, and dramatic sound. This quintessential collector’s edition compiles Spector’s most essential and enduring work from the beginning of his career, gathering a variety of the great sides he produced for a dozen different labels, such as Atlantic, ABC-Paramount, Gregmark, Jamie, Trey, Musicor, Dunes, Big Top, or his own Philles Records, between 1961 and 1962.

Killer cuts from the legendary Hamilton Bohannon – an artist who first broke big on the Brunswick label with a really unique approach to a groove! Bohannon's cuts were always funky, but never straight funk – and instead, he had this minimalist way of layering together elements that was definitely a huge influence on later disco and club – but heard here in a style that's much more raw and down to earth! The package offers up 23 tracks that come from 45s that Bohannon did for the Brunswick label – some of which have different mixes, and all of which are razor-sharp groovers that are sure to please any fan of funk. Titles include "Run It On Down Mr DJ (parts 1 & 2)", "Come Winter", "Happy Feeling", "Gittin Off", "Have A Good Day", "Bohannon's Beat", "East Coast Groove", "The Fat Man", "Red Bone", "Truck Stop", "Stop & Go", "Save Their Souls", and "The Pimp Walk".

One of the first Australian bands to find widespread commercial success in America, Little River Band brought a polished, vocal-heavy pop sound to the late-'70s airwaves, melding the rich harmonies of the Eagles and Crosby, Stills & Nash with a bit of AOR drive and soft rock melodicism. Staffed by a crew of previously distinguished veterans of Melbourne's vibrant rock scene, the group's sights were already set on American shores by the time of their 1975 formation, and within two years, they had achieved their breakthrough with 1977's gold-selling Diamantina Cocktail, followed quickly by Sleeper Catcher and its Top Ten hits "Lady" and "Reminiscing." Their acceptance in the U.S. was mirrored and subsequently exceeded by their prominence back home, and they headed confidently into the '80s with a string of hit albums and an international reputation.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Gandalf presents an elaborately orchestrated 70-minute opus in which he surpasses himself, his Earth Symphony. Gandalf's work has often been inspired by the music of other cultures. This time he takes us on a journey around the planet. He dedicates a musical work to each continent, incorporating characteristic stylistic elements. As a recurring leitmotif, a manifoldly arranged earth theme connects the individual pieces into a large overall work. Gandalf sees music as a universal language that connects people all over the world without the need for translation. His listeners, spread over all continents, are proof of this. The artist worked on the production for almost two years in his Mali Raj studio in Krems an der Donau. Thus the Danube, which flows through large parts of our continent, also stands in the composition as a symbol for Europe.

Almost a year to the day since I released my second album ‘Flicker’ here is a technicolour companion piece that pulls together the tracks from the EPs to colour in the edges of the record.
Influences, stripped down acoustic reworks and remixes by my friends, comrades and heroes all hopefully help the listener see where my head was when I made ‘Flicker’, but also it stands up as a decent listen in its own right.
‘Hatful Of Hollow’ is my favourite Smiths album, just saying…

Nina Simone was one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation, and also one of the most eclectic. Simone was a singer, pianist, and songwriter who bent genres to her will rather than allowing herself to be confined by their boundaries; her work swung back and forth between jazz, blues, soul, classical, R&B, pop, gospel, and world music, with passion, emotional honesty, and a strong grasp of technique as the constants of her musical career.

In the last years of his life, Franck created three chamber music masterpieces: the Violin Sonata, the Piano Quintet, and this String Quartet. Only the Violin Sonata has achieved a full measure of popularity, and this string quartet is virtually unknown, largely because of its ambitious length and difficulty in performance. It's a terrific piece of music employing the composer's trademark cyclical form: the movements share tunes, and the finale acts as a sort of summing up of the entire work. While challenging to the performers, there's nothing difficult about it for the listener, and this performance is just about the only show in town. Fortunately, it's a very good one. –David Hurwitz

Bent Sørensen’s quietly spoken universe incorporates loneliness, nostalgia and a feeling of loss and leave-taking. Of the works on this album, his triple concerto, L’Isola della Città (2015), has a purity that makes it one of the composer’s most immediate and gripping orchestral works. His dramatic Second Symphony (2019) dives into the resonance of music’s classical history, where every sound is considered with the greatest care and refinement.

Pomponio Nenna performed his musical activity mainly between Naples and Rome. The first printed edition of the Christmas Responsory dates back to 1607 and gives a precise idea of Nenna's stylistic elevation, highlighting the wise and sophisticated skill he had achieved in the counterpoint technique; this is evident in the fluid and casual way the single melodic lines relate to each other and, at the same time, vertically overlap in sometimes daring harmony, fully accepting the characteristic of an era that was passing from the modal world to the tonal one. The source for performing and recording the present album is the original print of the work stored in the Library of the Conservatory of S.Pietro a Majella in Naples.

The origins of The Roads has us returning to Escape Music and Khalil Turk's Turkish Delight album. Turk need some guitar work for the song Get Out Of Hear, so he contacted Gary Pihl (Boston/Sammy Hagar). Pihl wanted to play with the groove but needed a drummer so, in turn, Turk offered Josh Devine (One Direction, Levara). This led to Pihl wondering who the vocalist for the song was. It turned out to be Josh's father, Mick from the band Seven. Turk, who has the gift of both recognizing talent and musical chemistry put Pihl and Mick on to a collaboration, and The Roads was born.

Although the band Anathema has since gone down a much more atmospheric and melodic route with their music, it's important to note that the group began as one of the pioneers of death doom metal, a style of music similar in its melancholic feeling to what Anathema has done more recently, but much heavier and darker in the one it is executed. With a few demos and this debut 'Serenades', Anathema would be setting the groundwork for a style that has since become much more popular by the likes of bands like Swallow the Sun. Although 'Serenades' is a classic work for its development in that doom metal sound, it is an incredibly hit-or-miss ordeal throughout, and may be better appreciated for its place in history than as a listening experience of its own.

LaMarca is the brainchild of soul singer Abe Lamarca, who began his singing career in the 1970s, before moving to Los Angeles singing demos and working for songwriters before Scottie Bros/CBS Records released his debut album “LaMarca”. It was a solo endeavor that found this soul lover singing some catchy pop songs, a few of which made it to the big screen, most notably, ‘Hold on Blue Eyes’ from the movie ‘The Wraith’ starring Charlie Sheen. He devoted most of the 90’s to raising his kids in Cleveland and singing radio jingles and T.V. commercials.

Holly Cole's debut recording is a delight. Although she infuses a variety of standards with sensuality (including "If I Were a Bell," "On the Street Where You Live," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I'll Be Seeing You"), she is also clearly laughing at her image at the same time. Joined by pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch with guest appearances by violinist Johnny Frigo (on two songs) and bass clarinetist Robert Stevenson (for one), Cole's interpretations of the mostly veteran material are both haunting and ironic, making this a memorable and surprisingly original outing.
